Combinatorics of the Triangle Inequality: From Straws to Experimental Mathematics for Teachers

This article demonstrates the importance of skills in asking questions and the value of spreadsheets in seeking answers in the spirit of experimental mathematics. This is accomplished through an activity with straws recommended for lower elementary mathematics classrooms that was expanded to a combinatorial inquiry into the triangle inequality. Whereas the article is a reflection on a mathematics content and methods course taught by the author to elementary teacher candidates, combinatorial explorations motivated by an unexpected question by one of the candidates can be recommended for mathematics education courses of higher ranks. As a result of these explorations, a family of integer sequences (not included into the OEIS®) has been introduced.

Recently, a general class of the Hermit--Hadamard-Fejer inequality on convex functions is studied in [H. Budak, March 2019, 74:29, textit{Results in Mathematics}]. In this paper, we establish a generalization of Hermit--Hadamard--Fejer inequality for fractional integral based on co-ordinated convex functions.Our results generalize and improve several inequalities obtained in earlier studies.

Ramanujan graphs have extremal spectral properties, which imply a remarkable combinatorial behavior. In this paper we compute the high-dimensional Laplace spectrum of Ramanujan triangle complexes, and show that it implies a combinatorial expansion property, and a pseudo-randomness result. For this purpose we prove a Cheeger-type inequality and a mixing lemma of independent interest.
